ROTARY CLASSIFICATION LIST

Rotary International does not maintain a general or standard list of classifications due to ever changing landscape of proffesional work and unique commercial environments. Classifications are not rigid but flexible to reflect the various positions or professions in the area.

The above classification list is general in nature and could be used in most medium size Rotary Clubs.

To customize it for your club simply remove the classifications that are not available in your area and add those that are not shown on this list. It is suggested that you use a Chamber of Commerce business list or the headings in your local yellow page phone directory of chamber of commerce to help modify this list to fit your available classifications.

Reformat and show your member's name after their classification and the classifications left without a name are the ones you need to start filling

What to consider before making classification list.
 Identify the missing classifications
 Inform the club members
 Assign each member the duty to identify suitable candidates
 Membership requirements/ recruitment plan
 Existing classifications in the club
 Service projects available
 Club strategic plan on membership
 Country district and RI goals on membership

Purpose of the classification survey

• Identifying vacant classifications for recruitment.
• Ensure that club membership is balanced and is representative of the business, vocational and professional life of its community.
• Developing a pool of resources and expertise to successfully implement service projects.
• Better understanding of other occupations/ vocations/ proffesions.
• Creating better understanding and pride in own occupation.
• Identifying the various classification available in the club
• Establishing the potential available in the community
• Improving fellowship
• Updating the knowledge of the Rotarians

who should do the classification survey.

This can be done by either the classification committee or the club or the membership committee, under the general supervision of the board.

Here is the updated list of acceptable classications in Rotary But this can be subject to ammendments in your clubs.

TYPES OF MEMBERSHIP IN ROTARY CLUBS

TWO TYPES

1. Active membership – who fulfill membership qualifications.

2. Non active i.e Honorable members especially who do not hold classifications.

3. Membership not to be restricted on the basis of gender, race, color, creed, national origin.

Article (5) section 2 (b) of the RI constitution requires the club to have a well balanced membership in which no one business or profession or type of community service predominates the following criteria has been set.

Not more than 5 members of the same classification in a club. If the club membership is more than 50 the above limit may be exceeded so long as the classification does not exceed 10% of the membership.

Retired members can continue under their former classifications and are exempted from the above computation and limit.

Transferring members can be admitted even if this will exceed the classification limit.

Existing members changing classification are allowed even if this exceeds the limit.

Holders of public office for a specified time are not eligible to active membership under the classification of such office except those in the judiciary, schools, colleges, or other institutions of learning.

Other public officers have to continue serving under their existing classifications.

CONDUCTING A ROTARY CLASSIFICATION SURVEY

Classification according to Oxford Advanced teacher’s Dictionary is the act of classifying or creating groups or classes.

To survey is to look carefully at something.

Classification survey in a rotary club refers to scrutinizing various professions, vocations in a club for purposes of enhancing service.

• Each member of rotary club is given a classification at the time of induction, normally relating to his work or profession.
• A classification describes either the principal business or the professional service of the organization that the Rotarian works for or the Rotarians own activity within that organization.
• Article 5 Section 2 of the Constitution of Rotary International (RI) replicated in club’s rotary constitutions provides “ the following qualifications for a person to be a member of a rotary club
• An adult of good character
• Involved in good business, a professional and/ or reputable community leader engaged as proprietor, partner, corporate officer, or manager of any worthy and recognized business or profession.
• Holding any important position in any worthy and recognized business or profession or any branch or agency with executive capacity and discretionary authority.
• Having retired from any position listed above.
• Being a community leader, who has demonstrated through personal involvement in community affairs a commitment to service and the object of rotary.
• Having the status of rotary foundation alumnus .

In addition to the above his/her place of business or residence located in the
locality of the club or the surrounding area.
